Industry Background
With its strong demand for resources China is THE engine of the global mining industry and will not only welcome investors to develop projects in China but will increasingly look to invest abroad
• During the 10th five-year plan period (2000-2005), China’s mining output value doubled, reaching some RMB1,481 billion (USD190 billion) in 2005
• The total mineral production in 2005: some 7 billion tons, with coal, steel, copper, aluminum and cement production being the highest in the world
• 2007 (Jan. – Nov.) production figures in China:
Total production of 10 nonferrous metals (Cu, Al, Ni, Pb, Zn, W, Mo, Sn, Sb, Hg): 21.31 million tons (24.9% year on year increase), in which:
- Zinc: 3. 40 million tons (18.9% increase)
- Copper: 3.14 million tons (balanced with the same period last year)
- Lead: 2.44 million tons (5.7% increase)
- Electrolytic aluminum: 11.16 million tons (34.6% increase)
- Alumina: 17.77million tons (48.7% increase)
• 2007 (Jan. – Nov.) export figures for China:
Total export quantity of 8 important nonferrous metals (Cu, copper products, Al, aluminum products, Zn, Sn, Sb, Mn): 3.18 million tons (11.5% year on year decrease)
- Copper: 119,000 tons (50.9% decrease)
- Copper product: 452,000 tons (11.8% decrease)
- Aluminum: 490,000 tons (50.9% decrease)
• 2007 (Jan. – Sep.) import figures for China:
- Copper not forged or rolled: 12.26 million tons (93% increase)
- Copper processing products: 785,000 tons (3.4% decrease)
- Aluminum not forged or rolled: 203,000 tons (50.7% decrease)
- Aluminum processing products: 516,000 tons (1% increase)
- Alumina: 3.94 million tons (24.9% increase)
- Copper concentrate: 3.46 million tons (26.8% increase)
- Lead concentrate: 945,000 tons (14.5% increase)
- Zinc concentrate: 1.55 million tons (178.1% increase)
• To implement the 11th five-year plan (2006-2010) with regards to minerals and metals, China has the following goals:
- Stabilize the global minerals market
- Establish a new order for international mining economics by enhancing negotiation and dialogue, fighting against price monopoly and promoting fair trade
- Promote sustainable development of mineral resources
- Strengthen international cooperation by developing minerals trading, increasing mutual investment and facilitate transportation of mineral products
